Get Face To Face With Birds of Prey

Just over an hour from downtown San Francisco, there’s a hidden gem where you can get up close with some of California’s most awe-inspiring wildlife. The California Raptor Center, operated by UC Davis, serves as both a wildlife hospital and an educational sanctuary dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of raptors—birds of prey like hawks, owls, falcons, and eagles.

Veterinary students from UC Davis staff the center, gaining hands-on experience as they help nurse these birds back to health. On any given visit, you might see bald eagles, golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, great horned owls, barn owls, peregrine falcons, American kestrels, and others.

You can visit this family-friendly destination for free, though the center gladly accepts donations. Kids (and adults) will enjoy walking through the outdoor enclosures, where you might hear the birds call to each other, spot one soaring across its pen, or—if your timing is right—watch staff feed the birds or bring one out for a close-up encounter.

While many raptors are eventually released back into the wild, others have injuries that prevent release. These non-releasable birds become ambassadors for their species, living in spacious enclosures where visitors can learn about them up close.

It’s a rare and inspiring chance to meet these powerful creatures and learn more about the important role they play in California’s ecosystems.

Activity Center and Store

Inside the Activity Center, kids (and curious adults) will find plenty of hands-on fun. One of the highlights? Sifting through mulch to uncover real bird bones—then using a chart to identify which part of the bird they came from. It’s part science lab, part treasure hunt.

Additionally, you’ll also find a life-size replica of a burrowing owl’s den, where you can learn how these adorable little raptors make their homes underground. It’s educational, interactive, and a great way to connect with the lives of these unique birds.

Before you leave, stop by the small store to pick up a souvenir. They have hats, shirts, buttons, and other items to help support the center—and show off your love for raptors.
